How It's Calculated
A tip is a straight percentage of the bill, and the split is that total divided by the number of people paying.
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ people
Worked example: a $85.00 bill at 18% gives a tip of 85 × 0.18 = $15.30, a total of $100.30, and $50.15 each between two people.
Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent for display. When a total does not divide evenly, the individual shares can be a cent short of the total — round one share up to cover it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides say the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax goes to the state rather than paying for service. Tipping on the post-tax total is also common and simply adds a little more. On a $100 meal with 8% tax, a 20% tip is $20.00 pre-tax and $21.60 post-tax.
What's the standard tip at a restaurant?
For sit-down table service in the US, 18–20% is the current standard. 15% reads as a signal that something went wrong, and 25% or more is for exceptional service. Check the bill first — many restaurants add an automatic gratuity of 18–20% for large parties, and paying twice is an expensive mistake.
How do you split a bill unevenly?
Total up what each person ordered, then apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal so everyone tips in proportion to what they spent. A fast shortcut: divide the final total including tip by the pre-tip subtotal to get a multiplier, then multiply each person's items by that number. If an even split leaves stray cents, round each share up to the nearest quarter and let the extra go to the server.
Do you still tip if a service charge is on the bill?
If the bill already lists a service charge, gratuity or auto-grat, that is the tip — no additional amount is expected. Anything extra is optional and usually reserved for unusually good service. A service charge is not always passed through to the server, so if that matters to you, ask.
